According to the Society for Packaging Market Research (Gesellschaft für Verpackungsmarktforschung, GVM), 346,831  tons of waste were generated in Germany in 2017 by disposable tableware and to-go packaging made of plastic, aluminum, paper and cardboard. In Berlin alone, 460,000 coffee-to-go cups are consumed every day. On top of this are vast quantities of plastic bags and packaging waste for takeaway meals. Disposable products contribute significantly to climate change through CO₂ emissions from production, transport and combustion of packaging. Carelessly discarded and left lying around, they pollute streets, squares, parks and landscapes and are a danger to all living creatures. Collecting and disposing of the waste lying around costs the public sector a lot of money.
